CHULA VISTA Following a five hour special council meeting on Thursday to appoint a fifth member to the dais, the Chula Vista City Council decided to continue the meeting until next week following a stalemate. Jan. 13.After interviewing eight nominees to select one to potentially fill the vacant council seat, council members were Blue Patent leather Mater Claude 100mm divided between two applicants.Mayor Mary Salas and Councilwoman Patricia Aguilar pushed for James Clark, while Vice Mayor Pamela Bensoussan and Councilman John McCann opted for former Chula Vista Mayor Shirley Horton.Bensoussan recommended continuing the discussion at a later date and McCann agreed.At first, Salas was bent on making a decision, but after requesting a five minute recess, she returned with the council to postpone it.A person cannot be appointed until they receive three confirming votes. That person will fill the two year vacancy left when Councilwoman Salas was elected mayor in November."It’s a very difficult decision that Rose Patent leather Mater Claude 100mm we’ll be making, and we need to make sure that the council can work with whoever we appoint," Salas said.Council members agreed they didn’t want to default to a special election because they couldn’t reach a consensus. However, come Jan. 23, if three of them can’t decide on someone, that’s what will happen.A special election would cost taxpayers about $600,000.Forty four people applied for the position, which pays about $50,000.Council members gave eight nominations to the city clerk Monday after reviewing their applications and resumes.The eight nominated were Clark, Thomas Glover, Bill Hall, Horton, Mark Liuag, Steve Miesen, Lisa Moctezuma and Jason Paguio.Horton served as former Chula Vista mayor from 1994 to 2002 and state assemblywoman from 2002 to 2008.She is now the director of development for South Bay Community Services. Horton said that if appointed she would resign her position with the organization.Clark is the executive director for the San Diego/Tijuana Smart Border Coalition. He previously served as the general director to the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce/Mexico Business Center.
